Scripture Memory — Bah Humbug!???

MP900262642 “I would like to pray Psalms 91 for you,” my friend announced.  “Huh?  Ok -go ahead – fine with me,” I said.  So she did.  It was a beautiful prayer, but I didn’t think much about it – until the next week when I  encountered some mountain lions.

Afterward, I thought about those scriptures my friend prayed – especially Psalms 91:11 “For He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways…”

and Psalms 91:13  “You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.”

Hmm – I thought — WOW!  God DID protect me from the lion!  WOW oh WOW!  Thank you God!  Afterward I decided that Psalms 91, was a cool chapter to memorize, so I started working on it.

Well — I am here to HIGHLY recommend scripture memory to you!  I have not finished memorizing Psalms 91 yet, but I’m getting close.  I can not describe to you the wonderful medicine this has been to my soul!  God’s word has soaked into my heart and OH the peace and joy I have experienced!

No, I don’t think that the act of memorizing the scripture is somehow magical.  The Pharisees in the Bible knew lots of scripture, but their hearts were hard.

But I do think that with an open heart towards God’s word, that He uses that somehow!  I am almost beyond words in how amazing this fellowship has been.     So – I encourage you with all that I have — Find a scripture that you like and memorize it, and then open your heart to God’s leading!

It’s wonderful how a verse will come to you just when you need it if it has been hidden in your heart. I remember learning that chapter as a teen and wondering when I would ever need it. There have been many many many times that those verses have come back to encourage me since that day.
